Children's palliative care handbook for GPs
Together for Short Lives recognises that it is uncommon for GPs, on an individual basis, to deal with families who have a child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition. Together for Short Lives has designed this handbook to support GPs when they face the challenge of caring for a child with palliative care needs, to guide them through the pathway approach to planning and delivering care, and to signpost them to more detailed resources should they be required.
This handbook provides a practical and emotional support guide for GPs across the UK who face the challenge of working with a child requiring palliative or end of life care, and their family.
When a child is diagnosed with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition, a multi-agency care team is assigned to the case. This team will include a wide range of professionals from different disciplines and specialties, and you.
We hope to address the main questions GPs ask when caring for a life-limited or life-threatened child, breaking down what can sometimes seem like an overwhelming task into manageable sections for you to look at as and when each issue arises for you in practice.
Hopefully this resource will help you to feel confident about caring for a life-limited or life-threatened child in the future.
