UK charity ACT (Association for Children’s Palliative Care) has just launched a new Champions Awards scheme designed to recognise excellence in the delivery of services to life-limited children, young people and their families. ACT knows how much parents and carers value the care provided by so many individuals, teams and organisations to their children and wants this hard work to be acknowledged.
ACT is asking children and young people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, as well as their parents, family members and carers to tell them about their ‘Champions’. This is to highlight excellence, good practice and innovation in the delivery of care and support to life-limited children, young people and their families.
The three categories for the nominations are Best Individual, Best Team and Best Organisation and all nominees must work in England. The Best Individual could be any individual paid or unpaid who has helped a family i.e. a nurse, speech or physiotherapist or a teacher. The Best Team for example could be a team within an organisation, a community nursing team or a medical team. The Best Organisation could be a hospital, a hospice or another charity.
An ACT Champion can be nominated online or by filling in a nomination form. Call 0117 9221556 or e-mail

for a form or you can download a form here. Everyone who makes a nomination will be entered into a £100 prize draw that will take place on 30th May 2008, which is the closing date for nominations.
Each category of award will have a winner and a highly commended. Winners of the ACT Champions Awards will be invited to an Awards Ceremony at the International Children’s Palliative Care Conference (7-9 July 2008) in Cardiff, where they will be presented with their prize.
The prize will be an engraved crystal award and a free place at the International Children’s Palliative Care Conference. This will include two nights accommodation, all meals at the conference, a free place at the Conference Gala Dinner and travel expenses.
Those nominations that receive a “Highly Commended” award will receive a framed certificate.
Anna Gill, a parent and a member of ACT said: “I really welcome this opportunity to be able to thank the people who have made such a difference to myself and my son. I am sure that parents will be very pleased to have the chance to publicly thank those professionals that continually support them through very difficult times. The lead community nurse who has supported us has taken on a key worker role and she has gone far beyond her original remit. She has made a massive difference to our lives and I am pleased that I have this opportunity to thank her”.
Nominations must be made by children or young people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, or by parents, family members or carers of life-limited or life-threatened children.
An ACT Champions Awards Panel will judge the nominations. Please note that ACT cannot accept nominations for any ACT staff or Trustees. For a full list of these please visit www.act.org.uk
ACT will contact successful nominees in early June 2008 but the awards won’t be made public until 7-9th July 2008.
ACT would like to thank the Department of Health (England) for supporting the ACT Champions Awards.
Please contact ACT and tell us about your “Champions”.
Lizzie Chambers, Chief Executive of ACT added: “Through the ACT Champions Awards 2008 I hope that children with life-limiting illnesses and their families can nominate people who really make a difference to their lives. ACT wants to celebrate those individuals, teams and organisations who strive to do their utmost to provide the best care throughout a child’s life”.
